We have experienced an increase in numbers of patients being privately prescribed injections for weight loss such as Wegovy or Mounjaro. Your private prescriber may contact your GP practice to provide information on treatment suitability but under General Medical Council regulations, it is the responsibility of the prescribing clinician to assure themselves that their prescribing is safe. These aren’t suitable for everybody and patients with the below conditions should not be seeking these injections privately:
- Acromegaly or any growth hormone problem
- Chronic Malabsorption Syndrome
- Cushings Syndrome
- Gallbladder, Bile duct or Pancreas disease
- Gastric surgery (bariatric surgery)
- Heart Failure
- Hypoglycaemia
- Kidney Disease
- Liver Disease
- Pancreatitis
- Severe gastrointestinal disease (e.g. inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease)
- Type 1 Diabetes
- Pregnancy
The injections are also unsuitable if you are being prescribed any of the below medications:
- Amiodarone
- Carbamazepine
- Ciclosporin
- Clozapine
- Digoxin
- Fenfluramine
- Lithium
- Oral Methotrexate

- Phenobarbital
- Phenytoin
- Somatrogon
- Tacrolimus
- Theophylline
- Warfarin
You are also unsuitable for these injections if:
You have type 2 diabetes and you are taking any injections or tablets to control your blood sugar, other than metformin.
Have ever suffered with an eating disorder
Are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive
Have a personal or family history of Medullary Thyroid Cancer, Thyroid cancer or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia 2 (MEN2) syndrome
